frequently asked questions

All you need to know before visiting Livingstone Island.

When is the best time to visit Livingstone Island?

Livingstone Island is seasonal and typically open from mid-July to early January, depending on Zambezi water levels.

• Devil’s Pool is usually open mid-August to late December.

• Angel’s Pool and Rock Pool may be accessible slightly outside that window when conditions allow.

• The island is closed during the high-water season (generally April to mid-June).

Can children visit the island or swim in the pools?

• The minimum age to visit the island is 8 years.

• The minimum age for swimming in any pool is 12 years, and all children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

• Parents or guardians must sign a waiver confirming their child’s age and swimming capability.

Is swimming safe?

Yes — but only when water levels are deemed safe and under strict supervision by trained guides.

• Swimming is permitted only in low-water season.

• Safety briefings are conducted before every trip.

• Life jackets are mandatory during the boat journey.

• Green Safaris reserves the right to restrict swimming at any time for safety reasons.

How early should I arrive?

Absolutely. The island tour, historical interpretation, and 5-star meal make the experience worthwhile, even without taking a dip.

Can I still visit if I don’t want to swim?

Please arrive at the Livingstone Island Launch Site at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure.

Are health checks required?

Guests with medical conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes will be assessed prior to departure. Our guides may advise against participation if there is any health risk.

What should I bring?

Swimwear (August–December) | Comfortable walking shoes or sandals | Sunscreen and insect repellent | Camera and binoculars | Personal medication | Warm clothing (June - August)

Are the experiences suitable for all fitness levels?

While the boat transfer and island tour are manageable for most, swimming activities and walking safaris require a moderate level of fitness and confidence near water. The island terrain can be uneven and slippery.

what happens if it rains?

Tours continue during rain, but heavy storms may result in delays or cancellations for safety. Raincoats are provided during wetter months. Refunds or rescheduling may apply if the tour cannot proceed.

is storage available?

Small items can be safely left with the guides, but we recommend bringing only essentials.

can I fly my drone?

The flying of drones in Zambia requires a special license from the Department of Civil Aviation in all circumstances. The area around Victoria Falls is also heavily trafficked by Helicopters, Microlights, and other aircrafts.
For these reasons, drones may not be flown without special written permission from the correct authorities.

what about my valuables?

Please note that once you are on the island, before your tour, your valuables (apart from any cameras or phones you wish to take with you for photography purposes) will be locked in a metal trunk. Please double check that you have your belongings before leaving the island, as we host many travellers each day and any lost property will be difficult to track after you have left.

what about my electronic devices?

Our guides are experienced photographers and videographers. Over the years, they have handled some of the best camera equipment in the world. There are also places on the island where it may not be possible for you to take your own images, for safety reasons. At these times, our guides usually handle all phones and cameras, to ensure that you return home with memories to cherish forever.

However, our guides' first priority is the safety of our guests and of themselves. Staff handling of your electronic devices is entirely at your own risk. If there is any damage, the company and the individual team members cannot be held responsible.

tipping

Please advised that tipping is in no way mandatory, but if you wish to do so you can put any amount you prefer in the Gratuity Box, which is located at the Dining Area on the island. There is also one at the Launch Site reception desk. All tips will be shared equally amongst the island staff, including our guides.
