Meet Your Carnivore Heroes

The Zambian Carnivore Programme (ZCP) is a dedicated non-profit organisation committed to the conservation of large carnivores and their natural habitats in Zambia. Through a combination of scientific research, active conservation projects, and comprehensive education and capacity-building efforts, ZCP aims to restore and sustain vibrant ecosystems.

Their vision is to see ecosystems thrive and be managed collaboratively by local communities, scientists, and policymakers, all guided by evidence-based strategies. ZCP’s mission focuses on safeguarding Zambia’s large carnivores and their environments through meticulous scientific approaches, hands-on conservation actions, and the strengthening of local leadership.

Panthera’s Counter Wildlife Crime Program in Zambia integrates the Intensive Protection Zone and Halo Approach to offer comprehensive protection for wild cats. This multifaceted strategy includes site security, wildlife trafficking prevention, crime analytics, and demand reduction efforts. Key activities involve training patrol teams, analysing crime data, enhancing legal support, and employing a problem-oriented protection strategy.

One notable initiative, the Saving Spots program, partners with the Barotese Royal Establishment to address the demand for leopard skins by promoting faux fur alternatives. Since its inception in 2006, Panthera has dedicated itself to the conservation of the world’s 40 wild cat species and their habitats, utilizing advanced tools like camera trapping and citizen science.

In Kafue National Park, over 1,000 cameras are deployed to monitor leopard and lion populations, while citizen science initiatives, supported by the Green Safaris Conservation Foundation, contribute vital data on lion densities and distribution. These efforts are crucial for improving conservation outcomes.
