Empower Women Leaders in Carnivore Conservation with ZCP and our GSCF
Robyn Simpson | September 3, 2024
One of the most progressive conservation efforts in Zambia is the groundbreaking Women in Wildlife Conservation Training Programme (WIWC), proudly supported by our Green Safaris Conservation Foundation (GSCF).
Launched in 2017 by the Zambian Carnivore Programme (ZCP), WIWC is Zambia’s first initiative to empower female conservation leaders through hands-on training and mentorship in large carnivore conservation.
This program is crucial for addressing the historical underrepresentation of women in field-based conservation roles in Zambia.
ABOUT THIS INITIATIVE:
ZCP stands as one of Africa’s most established carnivore conservation projects and is Zambia’s leading training organisation for field-based conservation biologists.
The program integrates practical field experience with comprehensive mentorship across four of Africa’s longest-running carnivore conservation projects. This approach is designed to nurture the next generation of local female leaders dedicated to large carnivore conservation.
Over the past three years, WIWC has significantly scaled up its impact, training and mentoring over 34 Zambian women. Trainees, usually university graduates, are paired with senior female conservationists for intensive instruction.
This mentorship covers various skills, including research techniques, 4×4 driving, maintenance, data management, and broader aspects of ecological theory and conservation science.
The program not only aims to address immediate conservation challenges—such as protecting large carnivore populations—but also seeks to foster long-term growth and leadership within the field.
With the support of the Green Safaris Conservation Foundation, ZCP is committed to reinforcing Zambia as a model of effective, field-based conservation.
THE GSCF IMPACT:
Your support will help cover essential financial needs and address gaps in equipment required for mentoring trainees and enhancing the program’s impact.
Together, we can drive meaningful change and strengthen local leadership in conservation, paving the way for a sustainable future.
