Where the Plains Whisper Possibility: Timothy’s Green Safaris Story

Dawn in the Busanga Plains feels like waking up inside a painting. Mist drapes itself lazily across golden grass, the calls of crowned cranes pierce the silence, and the air tastes faintly of wildness. Somewhere in the distance, lions stir. And somewhere closer, probably near the bird’s nest suites of Chisa Busanga Camp — a man is already awake, notebook in hand, quietly readying his team for another day in one of the most magical corners of Zambia.

That man is Timothy Mutemba, the Lodge Manager of Chisa Busanga. His story is about career progression and what can happen when ambition meets mentorship, opportunity meets resilience, and a company truly invests in its people.

Journey across Green Safaris properties, Timothy’s story is one of possibility and progress.

A Childhood in Lusaka

Timothy grew up in Lusaka, one of nine children in a household that understood both love and hardship. His parents worked tirelessly for their children and the extended family who came from the village to share their home. Tim learnt resilience, determination, and the quiet pride of providing for others from them.

It was a childhood that carved out in him a sense of responsibility far greater than himself. And though he began his working life at the polished InterContinental Hotel, it wasn’t long before the wild called his name.

Answering the Call of the Wild

A recommendation led Timothy to Green Safaris. He began not as a manager or a supervisor but as a waiter at Ila Safari Lodge. While he served meals and cleared tables, the wildlife outside the lodge canvas really captured his attention.

“I remember being intimidated by the wildlife at first,” he admits. “But my curiosity drove me to learn more about nature and animal behaviour. I was excited to start this new chapter and learn as much as possible.”

That curiosity, that hunger to learn, was the seed of something much greater.

Learning to Grow, Even in Stillness

When the pandemic slowed the world, Timothy found himself at a crossroads. Guests were gone, and tourism felt uncertain. But instead of sitting idle, he turned inward. One conversation with mentor Leah Banda proved pivotal.

“She asked me, ‘Where do you see yourself in five years?’” Timothy recalls. “I told her: as a manager.”

Her advice? Use the downtime to learn everything he can. And he did. From administrative tasks to leadership skills, Timothy treated the quiet months as a classroom. Slowly, opportunity began to open its doors.

The Stepping Stones of Mentorship

No journey is walked alone, and Timothy quickly credits those who shaped his path: Director Vincent, Malemia Banda, Leah Banda, and Chipasha Mwaba. Each offered guidance, each pushed him to see beyond what he thought possible.

Their influence carried him from waiter to supervisor to Camp Manager at Sindabezi Island, where doubts resurfaced. “I wondered if I could really do it,” he admits. “But my mentors reminded me: you’re not alone. Call if you need anything.”

That reassurance mattered. And with each challenge met, Timothy grew steadier on his path.

More Than a Company

Today, as Lodge Manager at Chisa Busanga, Timothy speaks less about titles and more about culture. “The Green Safaris culture is supportive, collaborative, growth-oriented,” he says. “They don’t just hire from the community — they lift us, train us, show us what’s possible.”

For him, this isn’t abstract. His career has enabled him to transform his family’s story. The ripple of one person’s growth, amplified by Green Safaris’ belief in empowerment, has reached far beyond the lodge gates.

The Pride of a Father

Ask Timothy about his proudest moment; he doesn’t discuss awards or milestones. He talks about his father.

“When I was promoted to Camp Manager, my father looked at me proudly. That expression — it meant everything.”

In moments like these, the meaning of Green Safaris’ ethos becomes clear: sustainable travel isn’t just about solar panels and conservation projects. It’s about uplifted lives, shaped futures, and strengthened families.

A Future Wide as the Plains

The Busanga Plains stretch endlessly, an ocean of grass and sky where anything feels possible. Timothy’s vision for his own future carries that same breadth. “In the next five years, I see myself continuing to grow and take on new challenges within Green Safaris. I’m excited to contribute to the company’s success and explore new opportunities.”

He adds, “I want to keep welcoming guests, helping them connect to this wilderness the way I have.”

Because for Timothy, it’s not just a job. It’s a purpose. A way to show that the best classrooms sometimes have no walls, only lions in the distance and cranes calling overhead.

Closing Reflection

The story of Timothy Mutemba is not just about one man’s rise from waiter to lodge manager. It is about what happens when people are given the chance to dream, when mentors invest in potential, and when a company chooses to grow with its people rather than above them.

So the next time you wake in your bird’s nest suite at Chisa Busanga, gaze out at the misty Plains and remember: somewhere below, Timothy is walking the same grassland paths, carrying with him the spirit of resilience, mentorship, and the boundless possibility of the wild.
